Creative Economic Meeting

Kendrick Sr. Citizens Center

7:00 PM

Several local business and city council people met together to discuss poverty needs of our community that effect the economics.

There is a need for both city boarders to annex to create more housing and bring in sub divisions that have developed in order to in crease the tax revenue.  What needs to be done to prepare the water and sewer utilities to accommodate more population and over all how would this effect our present facilities.

Wireless cell phone and internet service need to be investigated and find a service that would accommodate our area.

Both Kendrick and Juliaetta city councils need to communicate with each other to make decisions that will provide building for the future.  This will help the economics and increase the opportunities to progress in fulfilling the communities needs.

Tourism needs to be addressed, and there should be more activities than the Locust Blossom and Blackberry Festival to bring people into town.  There were several activities mentioned and it was also identified there is a lot of planning that has to be done to put a program together and new volunteers are not always available.

This was a good meeting of getting to know each other and where they stand on some of the issues that need to be addressed. Everyone seemed to be on the same page and willing to be supportive of any changes that would need to be made.

The meeting was adjourned with the next meeting to be announced because everyone’s schedule was involved with ball games and other important meetings.

Creative Economic Opportunities

Idaho Horizons Action Team Work Plan
Community: Kendrick-Juliaetta and the Seven Ridges
Action Team: Economic and Area Development
Person completing form: Robert Blair
Number of people on Action Team: 12
Names of co-chairs: Robert Blair and Bert Brocke

1. What is the need or issue your Action Team is tackling in your community?

Our main objective is how do we attract people into the community as residents, new businesses, or as tourists. In order to do this the infrastructure of both towns needs to meet the demands of population increases and we have identified the need for better cell service and high speed internet as being crucial for both towns and on the ridges.

2. Who else or what existing projects are you partnering with?

At our meeting we had representatives from both city councils and discussed what projects they are doing or need done. One project was a water project that is to be done in Kendrick. We also identified projects that are needed for both communities and that is water, sewer, and better fire protection. We believe that our committee can help to bring both communities closer together to help on these current and future projects.

3. What goals does your Action Team have? (What do you want to accomplish in the next 2-3 years?)

We have several goals that we believe will help to make our community a better place to live, for business, and for tourism and they are:
- Bring county planners and other outside people to our meetings so that development of the community (towns) is easier
- Try to connect Kendrick and Juliaetta and make one town
- Expand the city limits of both towns
- Develop infrastructure to handle expansion
- Give incentives to businesses that would like to move to the community
- Have high speed internet and better cell coverage for both towns and the ridges

4. What do you want your Action Team to accomplish by June 30, 2008?

Our action team needs to have a completed plan in place for us to reach our goals. This plan will include steps that need to be taken to reach our goals. It will also list key people that need to participate to reach our goals.

5. What impact do you want your actions to have and how will you measure the impact?

Our actions should impact new families coming into the community and new businesses. Since the world is connected by cell phone and internet, we need to have good coverage for both towns and the ridges in order to attract new residents and businesses. We will measure the impact by the increase in new families and businesses into the community.

6. How will these actions reduce community poverty and/or build community leadership?

The actions taken by our committee can potentially help reduce poverty and build leadership by having the ability to connect easier to areas outside of our community. By having better cell and internet service, people can take courses to improve themselves to reduce poverty or to increase their leadership skills, ability, and/or involvement.

By having a better infrastructure to our community, we should be able to attract more and different businesses. These new businesses should provide jobs for people in
the community hopefully reducing poverty. Also, we would like the new businesses and their employees to be involved with different organizations in the community and area.

7. What initial action steps have you taken?

We have had two meetings. The first meeting was to organize our committee and to make a simple plan of actions for what we needed to be about and what we needed to do to move forward.
The second meeting was made up of people from both towns and the ridges. Both city councils were represented and the mayor of Juliaetta was present (the mayor of Kendrick was sick but will be at future meetings.) We identified what both towns need as far as infrastructure so that they can handle expansion.

We identified the need for better cell and internet service for the community. We will be contacting an internet provider to see what can be done. At our next meeting we will be making sub-committees and assigning tasks that need to be done. There are other problems that we identified that we will be working on.

8. Other information you would like to share:

Our committee is made up of people who feel that the community is at a crucial point of either moving ahead or dying. All of us would like to see Juliaetta and Kendrick become one town. We need to break down barriers within ourselves and others in the community so that we can move forward. We have also identified the need to work with school officials and students to make this a complete community effort.
