Ray Shoulders and the other senior design students gave their final presentation at the University of Idaho. All Horizons community members were invited to attend. For those that came, it was a wonderful and full afternoon. Although only five of the Horizons communities were selected to receive the special input of senior design students on community center designs, the information shared was interesting to all. It is absolutely amazing what they are capable of doing. With a short window of opportunity to take on this project, the instructor and students did a terrific job.

Ray Shoulders Working With Our Community

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Ray Shoulders, a senior in Dr. Rula Awwad–Rafferty’s Interior Design Program, was assigned to our community to work with us on a community center design. Kendrick-Juliaetta and the 7 Ridges was one of 5 Horizons communities chosen for this hands on program.

Ray is researching best practices and design options that have worked in other communities as well as funding ideas and other considerations. He was able to attend the first meeting of the action team Bridge Builders, which has taken on researching the possibility of a community center among its goals. Ray was also able to meet with Lillian Howerton at a later date for more information.

As part of their senior design class assignment, the students assigned to the 5 communities will be creating a booklet that covers available research on best practices, participatory design process, designing a welcoming place, inclusivity, sustainability, and many other vital topics. All 14 of the Horizons communities will be invited to a final design forum is tentatively being planned for the week of December 10th. Each community will receive a copy of the research booklet for future planning in their own communities.

We are lucky to have been included in this class’ work. We are looking forward to the finished project. There will be a lot of good information contained in it that can help us.

4…3…2…1…Launch! It’s Successful!

Monday, October 29th, 2007

October 28, 2007 found a group of actively concerned and involved citizens gathered at the Senior Center in Kendrick for our Vision Launch.

Elizabeth Carney, who is our link to the resources available to Kendrick-Juliaetta and the 7 Ridges through the U of I, led us through the Launch.

We broke into 4 major areas of concern identified by the 211 participants at the Visioning Rally held October 17, 2007.

All community members and concerned citizens are invited to join one (or more) of the formed groups. Any of the groups would welcome new faces and ideas.

The groups have specific focuses and have set their first, and in one instance even their second, meeting time and place.
