THEY HAVE VALUE?

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

I am sure you have heard there is strength in numbers. The JES PTO is in the process of proving there is money in numbers, numbers of plastic grocery bags.

Wal-Mart stores will give schools $5.00 for each 60 gallon bag full of plastic grocery bags they bring in. Sounds like a lot of bags, but if you save one bag from your garbage pail and use it to collect other bags as you get them, you will be surprised at how quickly you have a bag full. You can drop off your plastic bags for this fund raiser at the Juliaetta Library, Juliaetta Grade School, Kendrick Sr. Center, and Stella-Jones Corporation.

Don’t Throw Them Away!!!

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Save your Campbell’s Soup and Box Top labels. The PTO is able to bring in money and supplies to help the school through these easy to save labels. The labels can be left at the Juliaetta Elementary School, Juliaetta Community Library, Phil’s Food City, or Honey Cut & Company.

If it has been a while since you have saved the labels you need to know that it is not the fronts of the labels you save now, but it is the UPC codes that need to be saved from the soup labels.

Please help support the Juliaetta Elementary School PTO in its efforts to help provide for the needs of the school.

Live Newsletter Thursday, February 21st-The More, The Merrier!!!

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Come and join with us at our “Live News Letter” meeting the third Thursday, February 21th, 6:00 P.M. at the Kendrick Senior Center .  Bring some finger foods, to go with our refreshments.

Guest speaker, Karen Richel, FCS Extension Educator from the Latah County Cooperative Extension, will be there to let us know about classes she has to offer on personal finance and financial literacy.  Her presence also gives us as a community an opportunity to let her know where our needs are and how she can help us.

Action Committees will break out into individual workshop sessions and than come back together as a whole group to share their progress on the KJCDA Horizons program.

We have four Team Groups working on designated poverty needs recognized during our Amazing Race Rally.  Group I Communications, Group II Building Bridges, between young and old, Group III Leadership Development, Group IV Creative Economics.  The progress these teams make will create an opportunity to be eligible for the $10,000 grant funds provided by Northwest Area Foundation.

There is the learning and capacity building funds made available by the University of Idaho , limited to the implementation of the NWAF Horizons Program that we have available.  This helps with the expenses acquired putting our programs together.  When there is a financial need for child care, mileage, training, work shops and other designated options they are available through this resource.

It is never too late to become involved with our local Horizons program, even if you cannot devote time for the full schedule of meetings, don’t hesitate to attend when you can your participation is important.

Updated documents on activities that have taken place can be found on our www.kendrick-juliaetta.org website.  We also are asking for your involvement on our blog http://kendrickjuliaetta.communityblogs.us let us know what you like about our Kendrick-Juliaetta & 7 Ridges Community.

Pug Mark - What IS that?

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

A pug mark (or pugmark) is what the print of a tiger paw is called. So, if you were out in the jungle and saw the tracks of a tiger, to appear oh-so-smart!, you would say “Hey, look! Pugmarks.”

In Kendrick, Juliaetta, and the surrounding 7 ridges there is now a new addition to the meaning of Pug Marks. It is a new service club geared to providing youth opportunities for service alongside adults from the community.

When a teen is asked, even jokingly or by other youth, when doing something good for the community, if they have gotten in trouble and are doing court-ordered community service, it is a very sad statement about how we see our young people and how they view doing something for no material reward. We want to change those perceptions.

You can help Pug Marks Community Service Incorporated, or Pug Marks CSI for short, by joining. We will be having a Pug Marks kick-off event in the evening of March 10th. Please reserve that evening to attend and learn more about how everyone can be a part of a new wave of good deeds in our community.

COMMUNITY DISTRESS CALL

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

Please don’t ignore the mailing you received!

What happens when you call 911 and no one responds to your emergency?

We may discover the answer in a very short time.  The communities of Kendrick and Juliaetta are fortunate to have prompt local emergency medical help, but the few volunteers of J&K Ambulance Service cannot continue to service our area without your help.

Let us know if you can help.

Juliaetta & Kendrick Fire Department News

Fire Chief Val Norris: Fire Chief Mike McGee

The Fire Departments in the Kendrick-Juliaetta area are currently taking classes in the Essentials of Firefighting. This class is a sixty-hour class in the essentials of fighting fires, in addition to also updating existing certificates and other trainings during the year. Our mission is to provide Emergency Services Response, Public Education, and Fire Prevention for the preservation and protection of life, the environment and safety of the citizens and firefighters in an ethical, safe and professional manner.  We feel our community is fortunate to have a dedicated crew; we had a very busy season last year.  There were 36 calls that we responded to in all. All this takes time to prepare for and do when the calls come in. We are looking for volunteers to help us out in all aspects. We can use help in different areas not just in fighting fires. Your support is needed, so give us a call and tell us what you can offer to us in support of the departments. Examples of help needed would be: clerical, grant writing, filing, fundraising, and maintenance. Any help would be greatly welcomed. Contact Val Norris at 289-3066 or Mike McGee at (208) 816-6072. kvfd@tds.net Stay Safe.

Bloggers Unite! But, Don’t Try to Blog at the Same Time

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Our blogging troubles today were undoubtably due to the fact that we were all on our blog at the same time. So… don’t dispair if you can only write in code. Try again later, and things should be better, with color and everything! Good luck to our new community bloggers. Thank you so much for training and your willingness to help out. If you have any questions, or if anyone reading this would like to blog, I am always willing to meet at the Juliaetta Library and help you out. Just leave a comment here. (To find out how to leave comment, check out the blog below titled “Using the Blog”.

Strategic Planning

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

The Strategic Planning for LCYAC (Latah County Youth Advocacy Council) was very productive. We split into groups, were given an assignment,  and had a great time hearing what the Student Ambassadors thought. We got everything accomplished that needed to be.

Here are the hard working groups!

Who Is That Mystery Man, the Midnight Shoveler?

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

It seems as if there has been some shoveling going on during this winter in front of Kendrick’s Methodist Church.  When it snows the sidewalk and entranceway are being cleared in the wee hours, (and not so wee hours!).  Who is this  mystery man, this Midnight Shoveler?  Caught on camera for our audience here he is revealed!

Underage Drinking Survey Results

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

overview of the K-J Underage Drinking survey:

The vast majority (53 out of 67) of respondents expressed concern about the issue of underage drinking, and believe that it is a problem in our community.  There was some variance as to how widespread the problem is.  Regarding the role of advertising in young people’s decision to drink, 38 responded that it plays a significant role.  Many comments pointed directly to advertising during sports programs, depicting young, attractive people having fun while drinking.  As for the effectiveness of warning labels and posters, the majority thought that prevention posters (45 out of 67) were largely ineffective, and warning labels were only slightly more effective (numbers were fairly evenly scattered across the spectrum).  Respondents’ comments keyed in on three areas where efforts would have the most effect.  1- Use “scared straight” tactics, showing the results of wrecks (many specifically mentioned school assemblies for this) 2 - Increase/Enforce consequences for providing alcohol to minors  3 - Publish names of adults who provide to minors, along with fines, etc.  Ten respondents indicated a desire to know more, or be kept informed on the progress of this project.

You, too, Can Blog! : )

Want to learn to blog?

It is a wonderful way to keep connected to friends and family, to keep each other up on the latest news.

Lillian Howerton and Elizabeth Carney are planning a blogging training for our community. The proposed date is February 11, time and place to be announced.   The training date has been set for 3:30pm, Feb. 12, at the Elementary School Library. If you would like to learn how to blog, get in touch with Lillian Howerton.

Everyone trained will be encouraged to blog on this blog site, but it is not a requirement to take the training. You will find it a great way to share information with others, and it can be fun, and is not at all hard.

We hope there is a lot of interest in this opportunity to learn to blog. If the day/time do not work for you let Lillian know, as it is possible for another training to be held at a later date.

(If you would rather learn to blog in a one-on-one setting, leave a comment here*, as the current bloggers are more than willing to set up individual blogging training during Juliaetta Library hours of operation. If you haven’t heard this already, I am sure it is because we haven’t talked to you in the last couple of months, or it was merely an oversight.) *see post (that’s what they call these articles seen here) below titled “Using the Blog” to learn how to do this

Personal note: I am currently following the pregnancy of my son and daughter-in-law, along with the rest of the family and friends of these two wonderful people. We all get the excitement of the first sharing of exciting developments, because they haven’t had to tell the story a million times already. It is awesome!
